My name is Allen Stovall, and I have applied (and continue to apply) my art & design skills in a variety of professional settings: in freelance illustration and graphic design; in web site design and creation; in more than 15 years of drawing special effects for such animation studios as Disney, Turner, and Klasky-Csupo (see filmography below); creating award-winning, illustrated displays for a large chain of record stores (in the olden days of vinyl L.P.s); in wedding / event videography and video editing; and as a cartoonist for a print shop.
In 1984 I graduated from the School of Film & Video at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where I studied animation, art, and videography. I also enjoyed playing-- or at least, attempting to play-- traditional Balinese music in the CalArts Gamelan Semar Pegulingan.
In 1987 I spent 7 months in the Central American country of Nicaragua, writing and illustrating (with help from some devoted friends) a 200 page “Graphic Manual for People's Housing”, a volunteer project designed to help alleviate Nicaragua's housing shortage caused by the brutal Contra invasion which was being perpetrated at that time. The humanitarian organization through which I worked was called Architects & Planners in Support of Nicaragua.
More recently, lymph node cancer brought a formidable challenge to my life. However, with the magnanamous help and positive energies of many wonderful people (and some strong medicine), the challenge was met and my life joyfully continues.
In 2008/09, I had the exhilarating and humbling experience of teaching a first grade class at a small Waldorf school in Los Angeles. This setting afforded me the opportunity to apply my artistic skills within the colorful and enriching Waldorf curriculum, and to interact with and learn from an amazing group of 10 talented children. (For information on Waldorf schools, see whywaldorfworks.org.) Although the year was largely successful, chronic illness led to my decision to give up teaching-- at least, for the time being.
Creating web sites, designing, and illustrating (with some occasional video editing) from my home office have proven to be the ideal situation. My wife Jennifer and I live in Southern California, where we love to hike in the nearby hills, and where it's never more than an hour drive to the ocean, the mountains, or the desert.
